12 Amazing Facts about Wrist Watches

1. Have you heard about Sundials? Earliest found examples of humans depicting time in figures can be found in ancient Egypt. Sundials are accurate for telling time. In this case, time is decoded by observing the shadows which falls on the sundial at various moments of the day.

2. Pocket watch gained popularity during the Tudor times. It was during the reign of King Henry VIII that it got into trends. Watches at those points of time were so large and heavy that people had to wear them like necklaces around their necks.

3. The first wrist watch was invented by Patek Phillipe in 1868. His first watch was Platinum Perpetual Calendar Wristwatch which sold in an auction for 3.1 Million Dollars in mid 2008.

4. In 2010 Patek Phillipe sold another watch through auction for around 5.7 million dollars!

5. In the beginning, a watch was a feminine piece of jewellery. Hence only women wore it on wrists. Wrist watches for men didn’t gain popularity until First World War. Soldiers started wearing them in the battle field for keeping their hands free and keep a constant eye on the time.

6. Dimitroff Petroff an engineer for NASA is known for inventing the digital watch!

7. Quartz Watches came into existence in 1969. It was because; mechanical watches were less accurate than quartz movements.

8. If you visit a watch store or come to our watch repair outlet, you will find watches display a particular time. It is 10 minutes past 10. This is because; the hands of the watch make a smiley face. It is a marketing strategy adapted for raising the customer’s mood!

9. People know Rolex for manufacturing rugged watches for every weather conditions. Did you know to check the limits of Rolex, US Navy attached it on the outer surface of a submarine! They immersed the submarine approximately 35,800 feet below sea level!

10. The watch recovered from Titanic that sunk on 31 May 1911, was found stopped at 02:28. It was the exact moment when its owner perished in the ice cold water.

11. In the early 1900’s a luminous paint was used for painting watch dials. This made them glow in the dark. But with time people found RADIUM-226. It is a radioactive isotope which caused poisoning and small tumors on the wrist! Since then they were discontinued.

12. The first watch worn on the moon was The Omega Speedmaster. It was worn by astronaut Buzz Aldrin during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969.
